FESTIVAL

A week long celebration of the music of Japanese composer Kohei Kondo

Tandem Duo presents the Kondo Festival: a week long celebration of the music of Japanese composer Kohei Kondo in the Phoenix, Arizona area. Mr. Kondo is traveling to Phoenix from Japan for daily concerts, masterclasses, composer talks, and open rehearsals.

Tandem Duo is collaborating with Arizona State University, and Phoenix Center for the Arts, Tempe Center for the Arts, and Tempe Community Action Agency to produce the festival. The celebration will culminate in a finale concert featuring the world premiere of Imaginary Folktales about the Valleys in Arizona, a piece commissioned for the festival

This is a wonderful opportunity for students and the community to be exposed to modern Japanese culture and music, and a unique chance for young composers to personally interact with an established composer from another culture. This festival is a rare occasion for audiences to experience a composer working directly with performers in real time to present a world premiere of a new work.

About the Music

Kondo's music is beautiful, broad, and eclectic. It is highly influenced by nature and landscape and blends a traditional Japanese sound with modern technique and sonorities.
